REI ATM / Loomis / Seattle Police Incident: The Cliff Notes

For new-comers to the story, here’s a brief recap

  1. On Friday May 8th, I took this picture at the downtown Seattle REI store.

Two Loomis Employees Refilling an ATM at the Downtown Seattle REI

  2. I was arrested by the Seattle Police at REI. This picture was taken of me by Mark Sangerman, another customer at REI

This is me getting arrested by Officer Abed at REI for taking a photo and refusing to show my ID

  3. After I was released and got home later that night, I wrote about my experience.

  4. The next few days was a lot of media coverage on various websites, print media, talk and news radio and on television news.

I was interviewed on NPR member station KUOW in Seattle, WA today (May 13th). The full show can be heard at http://www.kuow.org/program.php?id=17542. This is the few minutes that was about me and what happened at REI (mp3).

Here’s the audio from the Dori Monson show today (May 13th) where we talked about the ATM/REI/Loomis incident (mp3). It’s just the actual show parts, no news or commercials. It was edited down by Matt Misbach. (Thanks, Matt). I’m pretty happy with how the show turned out.

  5. After a few days, I wrote an update about the new things that happened.

  6. What’s next is not especially clear, but this is not over.

What happened at REI. An Update.

I will be on the Dori Monson show today (May 13th) at Noon (Pacific Time). If you’re in the Seattle area, you can tune into 97.3 FM. On the internet you can listen from their website. To use their in-browser player, you will need to have Microsoft Silverlight installed (gross) or use Windows Media Player (also, gross). Alternately, you can use their streaming MP3 in any decent audio application (iTunes, I’m looking your way). You can call in toll free at (888) 973-5476. You can email into the show through their website, too.

Also, you can email me directly (veganstraightedge@gmail.com) or on Twitter you can send me a direct message (if I’m following you) or @reply me.

Here are a few quick updates on things that have happened related to that blog post that I wrote about what happened at REI.

About The Spectacle of This Incident

About The Actual Incident

  • I was not arrested for trespassing. That much is clear. I was not told to leave. I was told in no uncertain terms that I could not leave. The cops had me sign a card as I was being released that acknowledged that (someone at) REI requested that I be trespassed. That means if I go back to REI within a year I can be arrested for trespassing. Although…
  • The downtown Seattle REI general manager, Kara Stone, was quoted on Slog saying that I am “welcome to come into our store” and that REI did not request I be trespassed. According to the Slog story, the Seattle Police records show otherwise. I’m guessing that the REI security people told the cops to do it and that the general manager was unawares of it. Either way, I’m not racing back there anytime soon.
  • It’s not clear (to me and others) if I was ‘arrested’ or just ‘detained’ or if the difference is just semantics. I never said in my post that I was arrested. I said that I was cuffed, taken out of the store by the cops, put in a police car and put into a holding cell for some time. Whether that was “arrested” or not, I’m not sure.
  • When I was released from the police station, it didn’t seem like any charges were being pressed against me. But when I tried to get the police report, I was reminded that charges can be pressed after the fact. So as of now, nothing more has happened with the police. We’ll see if that changes.
  • I was read my Miranda Rights when I was in the holding cell.
  • I was in cuffs the whole time I was in the cell.
  • We never completed the transaction for the thing I was trying to special order. So there’s not going to be any awkward “can you bring it out to the sidewalk” moment.
  • If there are more questions that you have or clarifications that you want, email me (veganstraightedge@gmail.com).

About What’s Happening Now/Next

  • I went downtown to request a copy of the police report. Because I’m listed as a suspect on the report, I can’t get it for a week while it’s in a process called ‘Public Disclosure’. This is in case there is any possible pending investigation. People listed as victims can get the report right away (as I understand it).
  • Someone (who wasn’t me) filed a complaint to the Seattle Police Department Office of Professional Accountability on my behalf. The OPA emailed me telling me, they’d contact me more later about it.
  • I contacted the The ACLU Washington State. They had already heard about what happened. We’re talking more.

The comments on every site where this story appeared spiraled out of control and off topic pretty quickly. My site is the only one where I have any control. So I’m trying something different than before. Comments are turned off. If you want to tell me something or ask a question, you can email me (veganstraightedge@gmail.com).

Update 1: I was interviewed on NPR member station KUOW in Seattle, WA today (May 13th). The full show can be heard at http://www.kuow.org/program.php?id=17542. This is the few minutes that was about me and what happened at REI (mp3).

Update 3: Mark Sangerman took this picture of me as I was being arrested by Officer Abed.

I’m Calling Shenanigans on This Bullshit

Today I got an email from a recruiter who found my resume online. Typically, recruiters are pretty douchey, but this email was pretty good. Not too used car salesman. You know the type. But the part of the email that rubbed me wrong was the obligatory legalese non-sense footer. It goes like this:

This message contains information which may be confidential and privileged. Unless you are the addressee (or authorized to receive for the addressee), you may not use, copy, re-transmit, or disclose to anyone the message or any information contained in the message. If you have received the message in error, please advise the sender by reply e-mail @[REDACTED].com, and delete the message. E-mail communication is highly susceptible to spoofing, spamming, and other tampering, some of which may be harmful to your computer. If you are concerned about the authenticity of the message or the source, please contact the sender directly.

Oh yeah, it was in 9pt Arial. Pretty tiny.

Here’s the part that’s bullshit, that a person / organization can try to presume that I have obligation to maintain some secrecy about the contents of a first email or any email without my express agreement. It’s like a one way contract. It’d be like if I mailed you a lease saying that you owed me rent. And just because I said it was so, you would be obligated to mail me a check every month. Whatevers. Shenanigans.

On top of all that, there was absolutely no confidential or privileged information in this email. So many people are so uptight about their ‘intellectual property’ that no one else cares about.

(And, yes, I’m aware that it’s probably enforced upon the employee from the employer to include this footer. I’m not blaming the dude. I’m just saying it’s bullshit.)

3 More Weird Dreams

  1. In the first dream I was a part of a kind of horse gang thing. But we were cowboys, per se. The arrangement we had with the horses was rocky at best. They were the very least amount of domesticated to be ridden. I was kind of a wing nut outsider / new comer that still had to prove myself. So I was always using these new horses that were crazy and awesome, but very reckless and dangerous. But I figured out how to convince this one horse that would run with us, but not let anyone ride it. I raced it on another horse toward this place. While we were passing it and it was catching up to us, it was biting at my arm. (Totally weird). Just when it got a good hold on my arm and was ready to pull me off or eat me or something, we arrived at our destination: an apple orchard. It was like horse heaven. After that, we were total pals.
  2. I just launched some website. I made one announcement on some other site. Then I sat there watching analytics rack up hits, like in that old UPS commercial. That was all.
  3. It was in the future. A friend of mine worked as an intern or assistant for this up and up business man. Think Tony Stark, but not as smart / handsome / awesome. She was upset at her boss because of something (I don’t remember what). At the same time, boss man was in negotiations with some rival about some new deal. My friend kept sabotaging things behind the scenes making it look like the rivals were doing it to each other. It turned into a full on company vs company battle… with spaceships shooting at each other and everything. The weird part of it was that boss man set up a temporary infirmary at his high rise office building. He was completely welcoming and hospitable to the wounded, regardless of which side they came from. Like this was some old gladiator way of settling business disputes. Just send the armada off to war, the winner gets to decide the business terms in the new contract. My friend got her revenge or whatever, because her boss went totally bat shit crazy from the whole thing.

I’ll try to chronicle my weird dreams if I can remember them when I wake up.

Old Boing! Collective Mission Statement

I found this buried on an old hard drive. Boing! is a house in Salt Lake City. It’s cast has changed a lot over the years (like the Bike house). At the time that this was written (~2005), the group was trying to make the house a little more of a community resource and less of a group of kids living cheaply.

The Boing! Collective

Mission Statement, an introduction

The Boing! Anarchist Collective exists for the purpose of providing / reviving a sense of openness and community for those who may feel disenchanted or alienated from the society in which we live. We are here to spread political awareness, hopefully leading to action in some way or another, and to show that there is another way to live outside of the impersonal and destructive (on so many levels) system that has been marketed to us from every angle since the day we were born.

We are an open household of tightly knit friends who are dedicated to the all-encompassing struggle that a long history of fear and exploitation has and will continue to ensure we all experience. As such, we have given up many small personal comforts in order to provide comfort for anyone seeking it. We are open from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm everyday and have many community resources that we encourage all to take advantage of, regardless of race, gender, political belief, sexuality, religion, class affiliation and lifestyle choice.

These include:

  • Complimentary internet access.
  • A large lending library (which we hope will become larger).
  • Political videos and dvd’s, some available for sale, all to be borrowed.
  • A large zine collection.
  • Media for sale at no profit to us, that are otherwise hard to get.
  • A group meeting area (must be arranged in advance).
  • Food Not Bombs, every Sunday at 2:00 pm.
  • Cafe (A)narchista, taking place every Saturday at 3:00 pm; including free food, skillsharing and fun.
  • A comfortable place to hang out, talk and just be yourself.

We would like to provide a more comfortable arrangement and more resources in the future. As for now, we simply want you to be aware that we are here, and we want you to take advantage of that fact. Come be a part of something inspiring, participate in what inspires you.

Ted Williams’ Last Game

A beautifully written recount of Ted Williams’ (and to some degree his career) last game. Stories like this make me well up with tears every time. I’m such a sucker for a great sports story, especially a great baseball story.

John Updike writes in ‘Our Far-Flung Correspondents: Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu’:

Williams was third in the batting order, so he came up in the bottom of the first inning, and Steve Barber, a young pitcher who was not yet born when Williams began playing for the Red Sox, offered him four pitches, at all of which he disdained to swing, since none of them were within the strike zone. This demonstrated simultaneously that Williams’ eyes were razor-sharp and that Barber’s control wasn’t.

John Updike goes on to say:

Understand that we were a crowd of rational people. We knew that a home run cannot be produced at will; the right pitch must be perfectly met and luck must ride with the ball. Three innings before, we had seen a brave effort fail. The air was soggy; the season was exhausted. Nevertheless, there will always lurk, around a corner in a pocket of our knowledge of the odds, an indefensible hope, and this was one of the times, which you now and then find in sports, when a density of expectation hangs in the air and plucks an event out of the future.

Ted Williams’ last at bat.

Ted Williams, Boston’s Achilles.

Ted Williams’ swing.

I forget where I was linked to this from. Sorry.

pictures of me in btown

back in like 1999 or 2000, i was hanging out in secret sailor books (R.I.P.). it was in the summer and there was some ‘high school kids come to big college campus for a week’ photo camp happening. they each had to a photo essay or something. so this kid needed a subject to follow around for a few minutes to do a slice of life series. so i volunteered. she later sent me these three photos as laser prints. i figured i should scan them before they get beat up too much more.
